WHAT HAVE YOU HEARD ABOUT GOD?”

Isaiah 40:28

Morning Meditation 12/22/2013 9/5/03

“Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding.”

When God’s people go wrong it is because they put the knowledge of God that they have aside and go on in self-will. God knows about this and will not allow it to go unchallenged. When the Lord raises up a people, while they are not accepted on the basis of their performance, they are expected to live a God honoring life and abstain from idolatry and the appearance of evil.

WE SERVE THE EVERLASTING GOD

Genesis 21:33, "And Abraham planted a grove in Beersheba, and called there on the name of the LORD, the everlasting God."

This is the first place that God reveals Himself as the “everlasting God.” The first time the word “everlasting” is used in the Bible is in Genesis 9:16: “And the bow shall be in the cloud; and I will look upon it, that I may remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is upon the earth.”

The everlasting God makes everlasting covenants with His people. John 3:16, "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life."

Hebrews 9:12, "Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us."

A.W. Tozer said of the eternity of God, “The truth is that if the Bible did not teach that God possessed endless being in the ultimate meaning of that term, we would be compelled to infer it from His other attributes, and if the Holy Scriptures had no word for absolute everlastingness, it would be necessary for us to coin one to express the concept, for it is assumed, implied, and generally taken for granted everywhere throughout the inspired Scriptures.”

“‘From everlasting to everlasting, thou art God,’ said Moses in the Spirit. ‘From the vanishing point to the vanishing point’ would be another way to say it quite in keeping with the words as Moses used them. The mind looks backward in time till the dim past vanishes, then turns and looks into the future till thought and imagination collapse from exhaustion; and God is at both points, unaffected by either.” —THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE HOLY by A.W. Tozer.

God’s everlasting covenant makes it necessary for the one with whom He made that covenant to exist to enjoy it. We have God’s quality of life, if we are saved. Everlasting life is an eternal now. That is to be accepted by faith. As long as we are in a body we are closed in by the fives senses and the aging process. The moment the Christian’s body dies, the believer occupying that body is absent from the body and present with the Lord.

THE TRUTH TO BE ENJOYED

God asks His people through Isaiah, “hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary?”

God wants His people to know that He is not as we are. He does not sleep because He doesn’t need to. He created time for man. Man gets tired and God makes a way for him to regain his energy. But He does not tire. He is not subject to fainting and neither is He weary.

There will never be a time when you go to the Lord for help and find Him out to lunch.. He does not tire. He is never weary. The Bible says in Genesis that after creating and forming the earth God rested on the seventh day. But He did not rest because He was tired. He ceased from creation because it was finished.

God has an eternal plan for His creatures. Salvation is not an end, it is the beginning. When God unfolds His plan in the Scriptures He speaks in terms of the eternity that He is and the eternity that He gives. What a great loss to the unbelievers of this world!!

God gives us eternal life and gives us assurance that we have it here and now. He does this that we may rejoice in the hope (not a weak word in the Scripture) of eternal life and that by faith we can begin to rejoice now. “Hope” is the joyful anticipation of a reality. Eternal life is a reality..

GOD’S UNDERSTANDING WITHOUT COMPARISON

Our text says, “there is no searching of his understanding.” God’s understanding is without comparison. What is there in the created universe that we can use to compare His understanding to. The Scripture plainly says, “there is no searching of his understanding.” I stand amazed at the understanding of many brilliant people in this world. But the most intellectual person in this world is as dumb as he can be when he stands up and reasons with God. Just to prove this, one only has to examine the creation including the creatures, to see that God’s understanding is without comparison.

May the Lord bless these words to our hearts.

In Christ
